A ribbon microphone is a transducer that uses an ultra-thin metal ribbon (usually aluminum) suspended between two magnets. When sound waves hit the ribbon, it vibrates within the magnetic field, generating an electrical signal. Unlike condenser mics, ribbon mics do not require phantom power to operate — in fact, applying 48V phantom power to a passive ribbon mic can destroy it instantly.
Ribbon mics naturally produce a warm, smooth high-end roll-off that flatters harsh sources like distorted guitars, brass, and cymbals. They use a figure-8 polar pattern by default, picking up sound from both front and rear while rejecting the sides.
