Best Mixing Plugins That Make a Real Difference (Tested)

Best Mixing Plugins That Make a Real Difference (Tested)

I've spent a lot of money on plugins over 20+ years. Some earned their price. Others were impulse buys I've used once.

By Daniel Carnago · August 2026

Touring and session musician with 20+ years on stages around the world. A great deal of the gear I recommend here I have used myself, on tours, in professional studios, or in my own studio.

How I test gear: to be honest, I have not tested every product on this site. Much of it I have used myself in live shows and recording sessions; others I have seen tested by musicians and sound techs I trust; and the rest I have researched in depth before recommending.
Verdict
If you can only buy one bundle, make it FabFilter Total Bundle — it covers EQ, dynamics and mixing better than anything else. Komplete 26 is the production workhorse when you want sounds and synths, and Melodyne 5 is the one to add once pitch correction becomes a daily need.
FabFilter Total Bundle
Pros
  • Pro-Q 4 — the only EQ used: spectral display, dynamic EQ bands, intuitive interface
  • Pro-C 3 compressor and Pro-L 2, the cleanest limiter available
  • Saturn 2, Timeless 3, and Volcano 3 cover saturation, delay, and filtering
  • Pro-Q 4 and Pro-C 3 are also available individually each
Cons
  • It is a large one-time spend for the full bundle
  • Clean, transparent visuals — no vintage analog character
  • Overkill if you only need one EQ — a single plugin beats a suite you'll partially use
  • If you buy one bundle, make it this one — but only if you mix seriously
iZotope Ozone 12 Advanced
Pros
  • AI-powered Master Assistant listens to your mix and builds a starting chain
  • New Stem EQ lets you EQ vocals, drums, and bass within the master bus
  • Clarity module removes muddiness automatically
  • 20 pro modules including Stabilizer and improved stem splitting
Cons
  • , and it's not a replacement for a human mastering engineer
  • Advanced costs more than Standard — a big price for home producers
  • Mastering-only — it doesn't help with the mixing tools FabFilter covers
  • The AI starting point still needs your ears — it won't replace judgment on the final loudness
  • Stem splitting works best on clear mixes, so poorly balanced sources may need manual processing
Soundtoys 5.5 Bundle
Pros
  • 23 iconic effects — Decapitator for analog warmth and grit, EchoBoy for delay, Little AlterBoy for vocals
  • New SuperPlate reverb and SpaceBlender add modern spatial effects
  • Effect Rack lets you chain them together
  • The most creative bundle — where you go to break the rules
Cons
  • — a lot if you only need one delay or saturator
  • Effects-first, not a transparent EQ/compressor mixing toolkit
  • Its character-driven effects overlap with your DAW's reverbs and delays for conservative mixing
  • The iLok copy protection can trip up users switching computers
  • Most character effects need A/B against the dry signal to judge how much is too much
Celemony Melodyne 5
Pros
  • Edit individual notes within polyphonic audio — fix pitch, timing, and formants
  • Surgical and transparent, used on virtually every professional vocal production
  • Tightens harmonies and fixes pitch drift without artifacts
  • The essentials tier starts and handles single-track pitch work without breaking the budget
Cons
  • The essentials tier is limited — deeper polyphonic DNA editing needs higher tiers
  • Note-based editing has a learning curve versus auto-tune-style tools
  • Only useful for recorded audio — no benefit for sample-based production
  • Unlocking full polyphonic DNA editing pushes you past the tier into pricier editions
  • For quick live-style pitch fixes, real-time tools are faster than Melodyne's per-note editing
Native Instruments Komplete 26 Ultimate
Pros
  • Over 150 instruments and effects covering every sound imaginable
  • Kontakt 8 — the ultimate sampler platform with thousands of libraries
  • Massive X wavetable synthesis, Guitar Rig 7, Session Strings, and Cremona Quartet
  • it replaces a studio full of hardware
Cons
  • — the biggest single spend in this guide
  • Huge installation — hundreds of gigabytes and long load times
  • Instruments only — you still need FabFilter and Soundtoys for mixing and effects
  • Ultimate is more than producers need who just want Kontakt plus a few synths

How to Build a Plugin Toolkit That Covers Every Job

A plugin collection is not about quantity — it is about coverage. You need the right tool for each stage of a mix: tone shaping, dynamics, effects, and finishing. Start with one strong option per category and grow from there.

EQ is the backbone of every mix. A transparent surgical EQ for cutting problems and a character EQ with analog flavor for musical shaping cover most needs. One of each beats a drawer full of overlapping EQs you never open.

Dynamics are where mixes get polished. A clean compressor for levelling, a character compressor for glue, and a limiter for the final ceiling handle 90% of dynamic work. Multiband dynamics add control when a single band needs separate treatment.

Effects earn their place by being used. A versatile reverb with multiple rooms, a delay that syncs to your tempo, and modulation for movement complete a functional core. Bells and whistles only matter if they make it into actual sessions.

Buy suites for value, singles for precision. Bundles like FabFilter Total or iZotope Ozone bundle give you pro-grade tools at a fraction of individual prices. If you only need one specific thing, a single plugin beats a suite you will partially use.

Is the FabFilter Total Bundle the Best Complete Mixing Toolkit?

The FabFilter Total Bundle is the best complete toolkit for music production. Pro-Q 4 is the only EQ I use — the spectral display, dynamic EQ bands, and intuitive interface make it outstanding. Pro-C 3 is my go-to compressor for everything from vocals to drums. Pro-L 2 is the cleanest limiter I've heard. Saturn 2, Timeless 3, and Volcano 3 cover saturation, delay, and filtering with ridiculous quality. If you buy one bundle, make it this one. Pro-Q 4 and Pro-C 3 are also available individually.

Is Ozone 12 Advanced the Best Mastering Suite for Home Producers?

Ozone 12 changed how I master. The AI-powered Master Assistant listens to your mix and builds a starting chain. From there, you can tweak each module — the new Stem EQ lets you EQ individual elements (vocals, drums, bass) within the master bus. The Clarity module removes muddiness automatically. It's not a replacement for a human mastering engineer, but it's shockingly good.

Is the Soundtoys 5.5 Bundle the Most Creative Effects Collection?

Soundtoys is where you go when you want to break the rules. Decapitator is my secret weapon for adding analog warmth and grit. EchoBoy does delay like nothing else — from pristine digital to warped tape. Little AlterBoy is great for vocal effects. The new SuperPlate reverb and SpaceBlender add modern spatial effects. It's the most creative bundle in my arsenal.

Is Melodyne 5 the Best Vocal Tuning Tool?

Melodyne 5 is the tool that changed vocal production forever. Unlike auto-tune, Melodyne lets you edit individual notes within a vocal performance — fix pitch, adjust timing, change formants, and even modify individual notes within polyphonic audio. It's surgical, transparent, and used on virtually every professional vocal production. I use it to tighten harmonies, fix slight pitch drifts, and creatively re-pitch vocal layers. for the essentials version, it's an excellent investment for your vocal chain. Once you hear what it can do, you'll never mix vocals without it.
